KMPC Westerners radio show, ca. 1947 |
In the Golden Age of Western entertainment, it seemed like the stars did it all--movies, records, TV and radio. And these stars often worked alongside each other. Carolina was no exception. Radio shows like the Hollywood Barn Dance showcased her talents, as well as those of Cottonseed Clark, Spade Cooley, Dusty King, The Plainsmen, Foy Willing, and others. She became one of the first female disc jockeys in the US, with her own show on Long Beach, CA station KGER in 1948. The Armed Forces Radio Service made audio transcriptions for the soldiers abroad...programs such as the Ranch House Party were quite popular. Carolina was privileged to create her own AFRS show, Carolina Cotton Calls--a favorite among the GI's. Television was in its infancy when the Yodeling Blonde Bombshell made her debut, in the late 1940s. Carolina appeared as a guest on shows like "Meet the Missus" and "The Good Egg", then future 50s classics such as "Howdy Doody", "Hoffman Hayride" and "Western Varieties".
Stayed tuned to this station, folks...

There are possibly many other shows where Carolina guest-starred. She did a skit on the Bob Hope Show, but it's unknown whether this was radio or TV (or both). She made video-taped shows during an early '50s tour of Texas. She may have been on a program called Cottonwood Corral. There are scripts to shows like Jax All-Star Jubilee (Jackson Brewing Co, New Orleans LA) and Teen Time in Wonderland (written by Carolina's manager, Bobbie Bennett!), and it's unclear whether these were broadcast.
